WOOLF have collaborated with Fameed Khalique to produce a series of beautiful one-off embroidered Ombre fabric (also known as dégradé fabrics) for a tailored Deco inspired interior.  For us Fameed has been a most intriguing supplier to work with, the range of fabrics, materials and techniques that he has at his fingertips is truly remarkable. We have been so inspired working in his studio pilfering each and every drawer, it is like Christmas for us; every drawer we open has another little treasure inside of it, which can produce an amazing array of great design possibilities for us to work with.

The resources that he has to work with have quite obviously been built over a decades. It is always fantastic to work with suppliers who are as devoted to detail and to sourcing fantastic crafts people, as we are at WOOLF. We really value working with people who have an endless understanding of materiality and who can look at our schemes and help execute them exquisitely. Fameed’s showroom is a renowned and respected resource, his collection is carefully curated with a designer’s eye for detail, finish and quality. Fameed has an unabated enthusiasm for tracking down the most original and interesting skills from far-flung corners of the globe. Explore WOOLF’s Art Deco project.

Our original brief to Fameed was really complex; we wanted to design three panels of decorative fabric but within that fabric we also wanted to create some texture and some movement with 3-D embroidery. A truly challenging brief to fulfil because the creation of Ombre fabric is a very particular and specialized technique. To be able to build in texture and form, using structures within the fabric, is incredibly difficult to achieve without ruining the entire fabric. We worked through a number of different ‘sample strike off’s’. The trick was to combine our beautiful samples into a trio of incredibly inspiring individual panels, but with a shared aesthetic. It was such an enjoyable process because there were no limits and the result was beautiful, and completely fulfilled what we had set out to achieve in our original vision. His couture portfolio includes such gems as the intricate beadworks from hand embroiderers, who honed their skills working for top fashion houses; and incredible woven fabrics using a traditional Laotian technique to weave fragments of leather and silk together with stunning results. Born in Yorkshire, Fameed developed a creative streak from an early age and showed a great sense of style and aesthetics. This continued to grow throughout his adult life into an appreciation for fine craftsmanship and design and fashion. Many of his design ideas still derive from a love for fashion, such as translating beautiful lace work, raffia and embellishments used in the accessories market for bespoke interior finishes.

Fameed is motivated by the thrill of discovering new uses for techniques and gets a buzz from the reaction of his clients when he shows them something new. Often this will have a strong artisanal quality or something which is made possible through new technology. He gets a great deal of satisfaction through surprising and delighting his designers and clients.
